Standby sets for occupied buildings
Commercial generator repair services.
A building generator gets ignored for months, then fails a monthly test or the first real outage. We find out why, fix it, and keep the building covered while we do.
NexSource Power repairs diesel and natural gas generators for offices, care homes, apartments, retail and public buildings across Alberta. Field service answers 24/7 from Red Deer.

The buildings behind the call.
Commercial generators share an engine design with industrial ones, but the stakes are different. What matters is who is inside and what stops when the power does.
Offices and retail plazas
Sets that keep lighting, security, phones and a server closet alive. Usually tested on a schedule nobody watches until the day it matters.
Care homes and clinics
Residents and patients cannot simply leave when the lights go out. A fault here gets reported with what the generator feeds, so the call is triaged on that basis.
Apartment and condo buildings
Emergency lighting, an elevator, a fire pump or hallway ventilation may be on the generator. Property managers often hear about a failed test from the fire inspector first.
Schools, churches and municipal sites
Buildings that double as warming centres or shelters during a long outage. A standby set that has sat for years without a real load is a common call.
Grocery, restaurants and cold storage
The loss here is measured in stock. Coolers and freezers starting together are a heavy load for a set that was sized before the last renovation.
Telecom and server rooms
Small sites with an outsized consequence. The generator often sits outside in a weather enclosure and gets checked least of anything in the building.
We repair the standby system, not only the engine.
When a building stays dark, the generator gets the blame. Often the engine is fine and the fault sits somewhere between the battery and the panel.
Diagnosis works through each part of the chain, so the repair addresses the cause instead of whatever failed most visibly. The generator repair page covers the common fault patterns in more depth.
Engine
Cranking, fuel delivery, cooling, lubrication and the safety trips that shut it down before damage is done.
Alternator and regulation
Whether it makes the right voltage and frequency, and holds them when a large load steps on.
Controller
The alarm history, sensor readings and start signals. It is the first place a technician looks and often where the story of the failure is recorded.
Transfer switch
The part that moves the building from utility to generator and back. A set can run perfectly while the switch never transfers.
Batteries and charger
A weak battery is behind many failed starts. So is a charger that has quietly stopped charging.
Fuel and cold weather
Stored diesel ages, and gas supply pressure has to hold under full load. In an Alberta winter, a block heater that has failed turns a cold start into no start.
Working around a building that is still open.
Some repairs need the generator, the transfer switch or part of the building isolated. In an occupied building that has to be planned with the property manager, not sprung on the tenants.
The repair scope says what needs to be shut off, for roughly how long, and what the building runs on in the meantime. That gives you something concrete to send to tenants or residents before the work starts.
If the generator feeds life-safety loads such as emergency lighting, a fire pump or an elevator, tell us when you call. It changes how the job is planned and whether temporary power is needed during the repair.
While yours is down
Temporary power for the building.
If parts are on order or the set has to come out for a rebuild, the building does not have to go without backup. Commercial generator rentals can be quoted alongside the repair.
Connecting a rental set usually needs a rental transfer switch or power distribution. How it ties into the building is worked out for your site before anything ships.
Repair, rebuild or replace?
Repeated failures, high hours, parts that are hard to find, or a building whose load has grown past the set are all reasons to price a replacement next to the repair. The diagnosis should say so plainly.
Replacement options include commercial generators for sale and the NPI Series, built in Red Deer.
What to send with a repair request.
Property managers and facility staff can usually gather all of this in ten minutes. It lets the technician arrive with the right parts in mind.
- 1
The building
Its address, what kind of building it is, and who on site can open the generator room or enclosure.
- 2
What the generator feeds
Life-safety loads, the whole building, or a few selected circuits. Say if anything on it is critical right now.
- 3
The unit
Make, model, serial and kW from the nameplate, plus the engine hours and fuel type.
- 4
What it did
A photo of the controller screen with the alarm, and whether it failed a test, a real outage or both.
- 5
The utility
Whether utility power is on at the moment. That decides how exposed the building is while it waits.
- 6
Access and timing
Tenant notice periods, quiet hours, or a window when a short shutdown of the building would be acceptable.

Commercial generator repair questions.
Do you offer commercial generator repair services across Alberta?
Yes. NexSource Power repairs standby and prime generators for commercial buildings across Alberta, with field service dispatched from Red Deer and answering 24/7. Call with the building address and what the generator is doing; dispatch confirms timing against the crews' current work.
Can you repair a generator we did not buy from you?
Yes. The service team is not limited to NexSource's own NPI Series units. Send a photo of the nameplate so the team can check parts and support for that model before the visit.
The generator runs but the building did not switch over. Can you fix that?
The diagnosis follows the fault past the engine into the transfer switch, breakers and start wiring, because that is where a set that runs but does not carry the building usually points. What the repair involves is confirmed in the scope once the cause is found.
Can the repair happen outside business hours?
Field service runs 24/7, so work that needs a short building shutdown can be planned around tenants. Ask about timing when booking so the visit can be scheduled to suit the building.
What does commercial generator repair cost?
Every repair is quoted after diagnosis. The cause, the parts, the labour and any rental cover set the price, and rental cover is shown as its own line so it can be weighed separately.
Do you offer maintenance so this does not happen again?
Yes. Planned generator service is quoted separately and set to how the unit runs. Many commercial repairs start with a battery, a charger or a block heater that a scheduled visit would have caught.
Building generator failed a test?
Tell us the building, the nameplate and the alarm. Mention if anything critical is on it and whether you need temporary power. Field service answers 24/7.
