Allow for the transfer interruption. An automatic switch transfers after the standby source is ready. Loads that must stay powered during that interval need a suitable UPS or other ride-through arrangement. Tell us how long your load can be without power.
Plan the rental

Start with your site details.

Have a single-line diagram? Include it with your enquiry. Otherwise, tell us the service voltage, what needs power and when you need the equipment. We’ll work through the sizing with you.

For an initial current estimate, use the amperage calculator. Final selection also depends on protection, connections and the operating sequence.

  1. Both power sources

Utility and generator voltages, phase, frequency, generator size and start-control details.

  2. The load and protection

Service rating, running amps, large motors, upstream breakers and a single-line diagram if available.

  3. The changeover

Manual or automatic operation, acceptable interruption, neutral configuration and any bypass requirement.

  4. The site and schedule

Location, indoor or outdoor placement, connection type, cable distances, start date and expected rental term.

Know which loads need to stay on.

Service upgrades & shutdowns

Keep selected loads on a temporary generator while the permanent service is isolated for work. Agree on who makes the connections and when the changeover can take place.

Commercial & industrial standby

Provide a backup source for essential loads when utility power fails. An automatic transfer arrangement handles the changeover once the generator is ready.

Remote sites & temporary facilities

Plan source switching around camp operations, site access and staffing. Choose the arrangement around whether an operator can attend each transfer.

Quote the equipment together.

Rent the switch by itself, or include the generator, distribution panels and any voltage conversion in one enquiry. We’ll check the equipment requirements together before the quote.

Equipment is dispatched from our Red Deer facility across Alberta. Include access restrictions and your required arrival date so delivery can be planned with the rental.

Transfer switch rental questions.

Can I rent a transfer switch without a generator?

Yes. Rent the switch on its own or with a NexSource generator package. Send the specifications of your existing generator and utility supply so we can check the rental against your equipment.

What is the difference between an automatic and a manual transfer switch?

A manual transfer switch needs an operator to change between power sources. An automatic transfer switch monitors the supply and initiates a transfer through its controls. Confirm that the generator start arrangement is compatible. The load still experiences an interruption while the standby source becomes ready. Continuous power requires a suitable UPS or other ride-through arrangement.

What size transfer switch do I need?

Send the service voltage, load current and generator details. We’ll help narrow down the rental. Motor starting, protection and the connection arrangement also affect selection, so your electrical contractor should confirm the final specification.

Can the 1,000 A automatic switch be used on a 600 V service?

The listed 1,000 A automatic unit is rated at 480 V, three-phase. Do not assume it is suitable for a 600 V service. The 400 A manual unit lists operation up to 600 V. Send your supply details so NexSource can confirm a suitable configuration or discuss a transformer package.

How much does a transfer switch rental cost?

Pricing depends on the switch type and rating, rental term, delivery and cable requirements. Any agreed connection or commissioning work also affects the scope. Send your site and rental dates for a written quote.

Who connects and commissions the rental switch?

Confirm responsibilities before delivery. Your site's electrical contractor may handle the connections, permits and testing, or this work can be discussed as part of the rental scope. The quote should identify who handles isolation, terminations, generator controls and the changeover test.
