Generator equipment

Start with the generator your load needs.

CNG makes natural gas available where a pipeline connection is missing or temporarily unavailable. A specialist supply system delivers the gas to a suitable generator at the required pressure and flow. NexSource can quote the generator equipment and electrical package after reviewing those supply details.

For larger loads, the CAT XQ1475 in our inventory is a starting point for that assessment. Its containerized, trailer-mounted package is listed at 1,475 kW and 480 V. Rental and purchase options are listed for this model. Ask about the listed rent-to-own option if ownership may follow the temporary project.

Model-level precedent supports the approach: a published DPS project profile describes XQ1475 modules supplied with CNG for temporary oilfield power. That is another operator's project. The gas specification and configuration of your quoted NexSource unit still need to be checked.

Fuel supply & package scope

Agree on the gas supply before booking the set.

A CNG temporary power project needs the generator and fuel supplier working to the same specification. Confirm where each scope starts and ends, including the connection between them.

Discuss with NexSource

  • Generator capacity, operating duty and the exact unit offered for rental or purchase.
  • Engine fuel requirements and suitability for the proposed gas supply.
  • Distribution panels, cables, transfer equipment and any voltage transformation in the electrical scope.
  • Commissioning, load testing and field-service responsibilities for the agreed term.

Confirm with your CNG supplier

  • Delivered gas specification, price, supply coverage and delivery frequency.
  • Trailer storage and decompression equipment sized for the expected gas demand.
  • Pressure, flow and temperature at the generator connection, including cold-weather operation.
  • Fuel monitoring, reserve supply, trailer changeovers and response to a delivery interruption.

For the XQ1475G model, Caterpillar specifies a low-pressure gas supply of 3–7 psi and a methane-number range of 55–100. Confirm the requirements for the exact unit being quoted. High-pressure CNG storage connects through a properly specified decompression and regulation system. Caterpillar model specifications.

Temporary power applications

Power the project while permanent supply catches up.

Grid connection delays

Keep the agreed site loads supplied while permanent electrical service is being completed. Share the expected energization date and the likelihood of an extension, so the generator and fuel arrangements cover the real project term.

Temporary and gap power

Oilfield production

Assess CNG where a producing site needs electricity before utility service arrives and usable field gas is unavailable. Include ESPs, pumps and other motor loads in the load list; their starting requirements affect the package.

Oilfield production power

Facility commissioning

Power selected equipment during startup and testing. Identify when each load comes online, the test sequence and the acceptable interruption, so generation and gas demand can be planned for each stage.

Larger temporary loads

Discuss a single large gas set or a multi-generator arrangement for industrial and data-centre projects. Paralleling, redundancy and changes in demand need a specific design and confirmation of the controls on each unit.

Megawatt generator rentals
Project economics

Price the whole operating term.

For CNG versus diesel, compare the same load profile and project duration. The delivered gas price matters alongside the equipment needed to store it, reduce its pressure and keep the site supplied.

Rental, purchase or rent-to-own

Rental suits a defined temporary requirement. Purchase may fit a continuing load or equipment you intend to move to another project. Where a listing offers rent-to-own, discuss those terms before the rental begins. Ask for each option to be priced against the expected term.

Fuel, deliveries and service

Include delivered fuel consumption at the expected loads, trailer and decompression charges, transport, electrical connections and maintenance. Agree on what happens if running hours increase or the grid connection moves. Savings depend on that complete comparison.

A short job or uncertain CNG access may favour diesel generator rentals. Share the site constraints and ask NexSource to compare the generator options.

Before we quote

Send the load list and the gas supply details.

01

Electrical load

Running kW or kVA, voltage, phase, frequency, motor starts and any staged load increases. Send a single-line diagram or equipment list if available.

02

Gas at the inlet

Gas analysis or supply specification, usable pressure and flow, and the decompression equipment proposed by the fuel supplier. Confirm these against the selected engine.

03

Site and deliveries

Generator position, ground conditions, cable route, trailer access and space for the fuel installation. Agree on site clearances and installation responsibilities.

04

Operating term

Start date, daily running hours, expected end date and extension risk. Include maintenance windows, fuel reserves and what happens if a delivery is delayed.

If your fuel supplier has not been selected, say so in the enquiry. NexSource can discuss the generator requirements; the CNG supply and installation scope must be confirmed before booking. For electrical connections, see power distribution rentals and transformer rentals.

Questions before booking

Planning CNG temporary power.

Can a natural gas generator run on CNG?

A suitable natural gas generator can use gas supplied from CNG trailers after decompression and regulation. The engine receives low-pressure natural gas, rather than the trailer's storage pressure. Gas composition, temperature, pressure, flow and the generator's operating duty must match the requirements of the exact package. A natural-gas fuel label alone does not establish an approved CNG installation.

Can I rent or buy a generator for CNG-fed temporary power?

Request a rental or purchase quote from NexSource. Send the load, voltage, operating hours, location and your proposed CNG supply details. The team can identify a gas generator for assessment and confirm the individual package's suitability before booking. Rental, purchase and rent-to-own availability is shown on each equipment listing.

Does NexSource supply the CNG trailers and fuel delivery?

CNG trailers, fuel delivery, decompression equipment and fuel monitoring are not included unless expressly confirmed in the written scope. This enquiry starts with NexSource's generator equipment and electrical package. Tell the team who is arranging the gas supply so that fuel and generator responsibilities can be agreed before the job is booked.

How much does CNG temporary power generation cost?

The generator quote depends on capacity, operating duty, rental term or purchase arrangement, transport, electrical distribution and service requirements. Compare that with the fuel supplier's delivered gas price, trailer and decompression charges, monitoring and delivery frequency. A useful CNG-versus-diesel comparison includes both the generator package and the full delivered fuel cost over the same load profile and project term.

How much CNG will my generator need?

Start with the manufacturer's gas-consumption data for the selected engine at the expected loads, then apply the daily operating hours and gas heating value. The CNG supplier uses that demand to size storage, decompression capacity and the delivery schedule. Include motor starts, later load increases, reserve requirements and cold-weather conditions. The electrical kW rating alone is not enough to specify a trailer or refill interval.

Is CNG a better choice than diesel for temporary power?

It can be, especially where a sustained load and a longer project term justify the gas supply equipment and deliveries. Compare the full cost, site access, noise limits, emissions requirements and fuel resilience for the actual job. Diesel may suit a short project or a location where dependable CNG delivery cannot be arranged. NexSource also offers diesel generator rentals for comparison.

Can CNG provide power while we wait for a utility connection?

CNG can provide a fuel supply for a suitable generator during a grid connection delay, even without a permanent gas connection. Plan the fuel deliveries and generator service for the whole bridge-power term, including possible extensions. Voltage, motor starting, redundancy and transfer to permanent power still need to be agreed with the site's electrical team.

Where can I enquire about a CNG-fed generator package?

NexSource operates from Red Deer and supports generator projects across Alberta. Include your site location in the enquiry so the team can confirm equipment availability, transport and field-service scope. CNG supply coverage and delivery access must also be confirmed with your fuel supplier. Call (403) 887-4567 to discuss the project.
